Germany's grand finale - Flensburg rejoices in Euro victory!
In a long-awaited victory for Flensburg, they claimed the European Cup title after a gap of 27 years. The title came after some unfortunate losses in recent years, with German opponents seeming to bring bad luck in the finals. Most recently, Flensburg lost to Göppingen (2017), Kiel (2019), and Magdeburg (2021).
In this game, the foxes could only maintain their energy level for 45 minutes before running out of steam, allowing Flensburg to celebrate. After the game, national coach Alfred Gislason (64) explained to Sport Bild, "The reason for the victory was the diverse squad of Flensburg. The red card affected Berlin more than Flensburg. Marsenic was missed in the defence. It's also important to note - Berlin had a shorter time to recover."
The match began in the Berliners' favour, leading by three goals (6:3/13%) early on. This changed after two two-minute penalties in a row (17th and 20th minute) for Mathias Gidsel (25) and Mijallo Marsenic (31). These penalties boosted Flensburg's morale and brought them back into the game.
Flensburg, with the most Danes among German teams, had an edge over Berlin. Names like Pytlick, Möller, Jakobsen, Hansen, and Jorgensen scored 12 goals, while Gidsel, Andersson, and Lindberg scored nine goals for Flensburg, with Lindberg missing two seven-meters. The goalkeeper Kevin Möller - also a Dane - stood guard for Flensburg.
The heated atmosphere was not limited to the court. In the ninth meeting between two German teams in a European Cup final, the Flensburgers had trouble opening the game, with two teams of seven Danes. The spectators were also involved, with a foul whistle for Mathias Gidsel in the 24th minute bringing a seven-meter. The tension reached boiling point when Flensburgers and Berlin fans began exchanging offensive gestures, resulting in a fight on the field and in the stands. Fans in the SG stands used the middle finger and sang, "We shit on Berlin." Calm was restored after arena announcements.
Unfortunately, things only got worse when Mijajlo Marsenic (31) was issued a red card for hitting Flensburg's Simon Pytlick in the face with a broken finger in a defensive action. Flensburg, now full of anger, were able to pull ahead in the score - 19:16 (37%). The match became increasingly aggressive, with Jim Gottfridsson hitting Gidsel with an elbow and receiving a red card. Flensburg was now on top at 23:23 (44%).
However, this level of aggression took its toll on Flensburg, who scored two 3:0 runs to go 31:26 (51%). Berlin couldn't recover from this and the foxes took the victory with 30 goals from their Danes.
The match for third place was won by the Lions, with Juri Knorr (24) defeating Bucharest by a score of 32:31.
