Creatures trapped in the Elbe mud's grip! - Firefighters rescue sheep from water hazard.

In the village of Klein-Rosenweide, Harburg district (close to Hamburg), the local fire department stepped in to help a group of sheep in peril. These poor creatures had become trapped in the muddy banks of the Elbe River Thursday night and were in danger of being completely submerged.

It all began when concerned citizens spotted the distressed sheep near the river's edge and alerted emergency services around 6:15 p.m. The affected sheep belonged to a large grazing flock that had embedded themselves deeply into the river's bed while trying to escape. As the tide progressively rose, one unfortunate animal was barely saved from being totally submerged by the waves generated by passing barges.

Approaching the surreal scene with caution, the fire department set up ladders on the silt to reach the distressed creatures. With a team effort, they were successfully able to extricate the panicked sheep from their predicament. After their rescue, these grateful sheep trotted back to rejoin their fellow herdmates on the safety of the dike.

Although no injuries were immediately apparent, all the sheep will be assessed by a veterinarian.
