Poor Reichenhall - Filled-in ballot papers accidentally caused an issue.
A citizen requested postal voting papers for the upcoming European elections (taking place on June 9th). She later discovered that the ballot paper she received was pre-filled with votes for the FDP. The woman voiced her complaint, prompting authorities to uncover four additional pre-filled ballot papers with the same selection.
In a brief statement, the police confirmed that there was "no criminal offense" involved. Bad Reichenhall, the town in question, issued a press release stating "no intentional vote tampering" was present but emphasized that "human error" had occurred during the election preparation.
It's been revealed that these ballot papers were actually leftover from the 2019 European elections, as they shared an almost identical look. According to officials, an "expert employee of the city" had removed the old ballots from the shredding room to examine them for reference in this year's European elections. Unfortunately, there was a "communication failure". She never returned the outdated ballot papers to the shredding room and instead folded them up, putting them behind the postal voting documents for 2022's European elections.
Mayor Lung declined to comment on any potential repercussions for the staff member. He insisted that they first require time to evaluate the situation. Overall, the city's objective is to run a seamless European election, as residents are entitled to a fair process.
