Specialists assure. - Fico's bodyguards in Slovakia were unsuccessful.
Fico, a Slovak politician, was shot on a Wednesday afternoon as he interacted with his supporters outside a building in Handlova. This incident happened right after a cabinet meeting at the House of Culture. President-elect Peter Pellegrini revealed that Fico could only speak a few sentences and suffers from extreme exhaustion while being treated at Banska Bystrica Hospital. His condition is currently critical.
An Expert's View: "A Disaster Waiting to Happen"
The controversy surrounding Fico's policies began to mount, including his relationship with Russia and plans for restructuring public broadcasting, which have received intense criticism.
Imberman, a security expert, believes that such an incident could have been averted if proper measures were taken. He stated, "In light of the volatile political environment, we should have told the prime minister against greeting supporters in public."
Instead of providing protection, Fico exposed himself and blended in with the crowd. Imberman explained, "His personal security guards should have created a barrier to protect him. They didn't do that. He was surrounded by people; they were all standing behind or near him, not in front of him. The perpetrator then had ample space to raise his weapon and shoot Fico." He added, "There was a violation of the rule of maintaining one metre distance from the barricade."
Security Failure: Inadequate Preparation
Bodyguards' presence and placement were severely criticized, with Imberman stating, "They were standing in the wrong place! There were four or five security personnel - all located behind or next to him. Yet, they should have surrounded him for effective security."
Such a lack of forethought resulted in the shooter being able to easily approach Fico and fire at him without any impediments, Imberman pointed out. The guards also didn't honour basic protocols when managing such a high-risk situation.
Consequences of Chaos
Former police chief Stefan Hamran expressed similar views. He observed, "The aftermath was chaotic, as observed by everyone. It exhibits failure." Imberman echoes these sentiments, further saying, "The security setup at the location didn't seem correct. Typical procedure separates guards into two teams. One is tasked with taking out the perpetrator, while the other ensures the safety of the prime minister. In Fico's case, everyone rushed in making the atmosphere chaotic."
Fico's collapse in theAfter heels of the shooting was another cause for concern. Imberman noted, "Though large-scale chaos can occur in such instances, the magnitude of the incident in Slovakia was terrifying." This led him to question whether adequate training was provided to the staff.
Insufficient Transportation
Even Fico's transportation was subpar. Imberman remarked, "The car was parked at a considerable distance and no escort was visible in the photos, suggesting valuable time was lost."
The Slovakian authorities will now be scrutinizing whether or not the Prime Minister's security detail had done enough to ensure his protection.
