Festival Goers Could Face Higher Costs for EDC Trip to Las Vegas
If you thought it was challenging to cover the $649 cost for general admission wristbands for Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) this year, wait till you hear about the additional expenses of getting to and from Las Vegas Motor Speedway on May 17, 18, and 19.
Taxis are planning to impose a $40 surcharge for dropping passengers off at the festival site, and a whopping $60 surcharge for picking them up. That's besides what you'll pay to sit in bumper-to-bumper traffic covering the 17-mile distance from the Strip to North Las Vegas.
The Nevada Taxicab Authority authorised these surcharges last month, insisting that they're vital to "financially induce taxi drivers to work during the EDC."
With an astounding 520,000 attendees predicted to attend all or part of this year's event, you might be drawn to the perspective of an individual in an EDC subreddit who shelled out $180 for return Uber rides from the Strip during peak/surge hours in 2018. The same person mentioned that this was preferable to their prior experience of two Uber cancelations amid a dust storm the previous year, stating that entering a car accident seemed more convenient than waiting for an unreliable Uber pick-up.
Significantly, the EDC website suggests alternatives like taxis, asking a friend for a lift, or carpooling. They've also got shuttle buses, but these have all been sold out for $169 (including taxes and fees). The remaining shuttle buses cost $279 and operate between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. from the Strip, returning at 4 a.m. and 6 a.m.
The only affordable travelling option left seems to be driving. However, even premium spots in the Premiere Parking Lot, next to the venue, close to the event site, have almost run out at a price of $165 due to the popularity of this system.
In summary, EDC attendees might face numerous challenges in navigating transportation when travelling to and from this annual electronic music festival.
