Football: A Popular Team Sport - FC Bayern contributes 500,000 euros to the Franz Beckenbauer Foundation.
FC Bayern Munich donated €500,000 to the Franz Beckenbauer Foundation. This money was earned through the sale of their jerseys and souvenirs after the passing of the German soccer legend, known as the "Kaiser". Before the Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid, Bayern's CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen and CFO Michael Diederich presented a giant check for this amount to his widow, Heidi Beckenbauer and her son, Joel.
"After saying we would do something upon Franz Beckenbauer's farewell, we're thrilled to be able to give €500,000 to the Franz Beckenbauer Foundation today," shared Dreesen during kick-off. "We collected this magnificent sum from the auctions of the jerseys with the 'Thank you Franz' inscription, the sales of our fan items, and various fan contributions."
Heidi Beckenbauer graciously received the check. "On behalf of the Franz Beckenbauer Foundation, we can't express enough gratitude for this generous donation," she said. "Franz helped many in need throughout his life, and we're honored to continue his mission with the foundation. Franz always supported the less fortunate." Beckenbauer passed away on January 7th.
"No Friends Can Be Separated"
A banner reading "In honor of Emperor Franz - give everything for the final" and a performance of the iconic Beckenbauer song "Gute Freunde kann niemand trennen" (No Friends Can Be Separated) were both intended as tributes to the respected soccer player.
"This semi-final against Real Madrid is an ideal setting: The stadium is jampacked, and none of us will ever forget Franz Beckenbauer, who played significant matches against clubs like Real Madrid with the team, and served as captain when we won the European Champions Cup for the first time, precisely 50 years ago," expressed Dreesen. "Franz Beckenbauer will continuously remain in the hearts of all of us at FC Bayern."
