Funkel must reconstruct his team. - Farewell to the league without the four Lautern players
In the final match of the season, 1. FC Kaiserslautern's head coach must bid farewell to the 2nd division with a victory against Eintracht Braunschweig (Sunday, 3:30 p.m.).
However, he will be sans four players who have played crucial roles in keeping the club afloat in recent weeks and months: captain Jean Zimmer (30) is ruled out due to a suspension having accumulated too many yellow cards, defender Jan Elvedi (27) is dealing with a calf injury, right winger Ben Zolinski (32) is still recovering from a twisted knee ligament, and striker Ragnar Ache (25) is taking a "creative leave."
The club's top goalscorer, who has netted 16 times, has been dealing with Achilles tendonitis for weeks, and Funkel doesn't want to risk further injury before the final in Berlin.
The coach who saved the day: "Regardless, we aim to win this game for our devoted fans. Here's hoping for an exciting match." Funkel also offers encouragement to players who have been out of action for a while. He says, "I'm not sure about my exact game plan yet. Kevin Kraus (central defender) may also make a comeback, as he absolutely deserves to start again."
As a side note, no players will be ejected from the squad before the game. The send-off will take place only after the cup final in Kaiserslautern on Sunday...
