FanDuel and BetMGM prepare Super Bowl 58 commercial

FanDuel and BetMGM are the only sportsbooks that will run ads during Super Bowl 58 next month. According to CBS, the network will televise the matchup on February 11, 2024 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Adweek says CBS has yet to reveal how much it will charge for a 30-second spot. During last year's big game when the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35, Fox was charging about $7 million per ad.

Longtime Super Bowl advertiser DraftKings is lagging this year after running ads in the previous three NFL championships.Caesars Sportsbook will also not be betting on the Super Bowl this year.

But FanDuel is back, and newcomer BetMGM is hoping to steal some of FanDuel and DraftKings' market share by spending heavily on Super Bowl ads.

Even though Super Bowl ads are the most expensive TV ads of the year, researchers say they often deliver a return on investment (ROI). Brand strategy research giant Kantar said in a 2021 report that Super Bowl advertisers saw an average return on investment of $4.60 per $1 spent this year.

The Super Bowl is a rare time when consumers don’t skip ads. Some viewers watch primarily ads. Kantar marketing experts explain that this will significantly increase brand awareness.

BetMGM uses Star Power

BetMGM, the sports betting and iGaming platform half-owned by MGM Resorts International in partnership with Entain, will debut with the launch of popular comedian Vince Vaughn and NFL legend Tom Brady Super Bowl commercial starring Tom Brady. In a promo released this week, Vaughn appears to have issues sharing screen space with Brady, who has seven Super Bowl rings.

Join us for this great competition. "Sorry, can we wait?" Vaughn says in the trailer. "Tom, would you mind being an angel and sliding off something? Another big step. Right there, perfect."

Vaughn continues to film with Brady, who is now out of the picture.

“Watch the big game with our BetMGM ad!” said Vaughn. Off-screen, Brady can be heard saying: "This feels personal."

"I love the memories we create," Vaughn replies at the end of the trailer.

FanDuel’s Gronk Reworked

Last year, FanDuel attracted a lot of social media attention for its heavy promotion of "Kick of Destiny" starring former NFL great Rob Gronkowski.

Last year, "Gronk," as he was affectionately called, kicked a 25-yard field goal "live" from a remote spot in the third quarter. FanDuel said in the promotion that if the kick is successful, the sportsbook will offer its active customers $10 million in free betting credits.

Gronk missed the kick, even though some thought he looked good. Many also complained about the ad's elaborate production, with some questioning whether it was actually live.

FanDuel has Gronk back again. In the trailer for its Super Bowl LLVIII ad, the company admits that the first rule of marketing is "never do the same thing twice."

New for 2024, FanDuel bettors have the freedom to decide if Gronk's kick is a good one or not. Whoever makes the right choice gets a share of the $10 million prize.
