Famous Poker Player Daniel Negreanu Visits High School Students' Card Gathering
Many of us wouldn't be thrilled about a total shark showing up to our small home poker game. But for a group of high schoolers in Las Vegas on a Sunday, world-renowned poker player Daniel Negreanu's sudden appearance at their kitchen table game was the highlight of their semester.
Negreanu shared on his Twitter account that one of the members decided to muster up the courage to ask him to join their game while he was out walking his dogs, Rocky and Apollo.
While walking the dogs, a kid in a suit walked up to me and said, "My friends are coming over in an hour playing our last poker game before going off to college. I know it's a lot to ask, but will you stop by and say hello to them?" tweeted Negreanu.
The famous poker pro then posted a poll on his Twitter asking his 546K followers if he should attend. 89.6% said yes.
Lowering the Limits
Negreanu made his way to the address with gifts sponsored by GG Poker and joined the table for a $0.25/$0.50 stakes cash game with a $50 buy-in.
It turned out that these players were students from Nevada's top private school, The Meadows. They were dressed in suits and played poker while listening to classical music. Negreanu was impressed by these "cultured young men" and posted a video on Twitter.
The boys were preparing to embark on new chapters in their lives at college. Some would be studying subjects that Negreanu, who left school to become a pool hustler and is worth millions in poker tournaments, had never even heard of.
"Classics and Government? What the heck is that?" he joked.
Negreanu won big in the low-stakes game, but left the money on the table and went back home to share with his Twitter followers that it was "the best night ever."
Human Connection
Its impressive to see how "Kid Poker," who has won over $50 million in poker tournaments, still hasn't forgotten his humble roots. This is especially important after he had to deal with harassment and attempted extortion last year at the WSOP.
In his blog, he shared how a man claiming he had abandoned a wife and family in Lake Havasu, Arizona, called him demanding $1 million to keep quiet about it. Negreanu informed the authorities and was even advised by his wife, Amanda Leatherman, to hire a bodyguard.
However, he decided against it.
