F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix Hikes Taxi Fares to $15 More
Although taxi driving isn't as prosperous as racing in a Formula 1 car, it will earn $15 more during the initial Las Vegas Grand Prix weekend. On Monday, the Taxicab Authority Board approved a trial program imposing a temporary fee of $15 on flights between Harry Reid International Airport and three resort boulevard places for the forthcoming race weekend.
The adjusted fares will have cab rides from the airport to areas above Sunset Road to Tropicana Avenue cost $37, to locations above Tropicana to Flamingo Road cost $41, and to areas above Flamingo to the Strat cost $45.
The surcharge is automatically combined with cabbies' existing meter charges and will become effective from midday on Wednesday, November 15, through midday on Tuesday, November 21. The need for this hike, according to the panel's five members, was to convince "authorized taxicab drivers to provide sufficient services to the traveling public while the Las Vegas Formula 1 Grand Prix occurs."
In other words, there's no desire among taxi drivers to be caught in F1 traffic, so the price needs to be raised to make it seem beneficial.
Industry representatives testified during a previous board meeting that the entire surcharge will be transferred to drivers/employees.
Uber and Lyft are expected to adopt surge prices during the event, which means the costs of their journeys will be raised to boost the number of drivers while simultaneously curtailing demand from passengers until balance is attained.
That's the plan, at least.
