F1 aims to clear out population living in tunnels beneath Las Vegas Strip
Formula 1 is redesigning the surface of the Las Vegas Strip and the world beneath it for the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix, taking place from November 16-18.
A series of interconnected concrete spillways direct stormwater from the mountains west of Las Vegas under the Las Vegas Strip to Lake Mead. The tunnels, known to local Las Vegas residents as "tunnels," stay dry between storms and the population is believed to be expected to swell to around 1,000 people.
Currently, a banner announcing a "Formula 1 Tunnel Clearance" says a "tactical force" will clear the tunnels of "any human presence" on November 15. Thereafter, the tunnel will be impassable until November 20.
First time meeting
YouTuber Sarah Jane Woodall first reported the signs in a latest video from her popular channel Wonderhussy Adventures. They are posted at the entrance to the most populated part of the Flamingo Way tunnel between Rio de Janeiro and Caesars Palace.
I really can't imagine why or how a bunch of people living underground would disrupt a Formula 1 race," Woodall said in the video."In fact, I would imagine the opposite - that all the noise in the race would disrupt People try to sleep there.
"Can you imagine having nowhere to live, finding this tunnel to hide, and then these racers come in and even throw you out?"
Darkness at the End of the Tunnel
Signs at F1 list contact information for several local homeless shelters, but the closest one is miles away.
How does a homeless man with all his belongings in a shopping cart get from here... to one of these shelters? ” Woodall asked.
Email these and other questions to the F1 Press Office and the Shine a Light Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established to improve the lives of tunnel residents.
As of publication of this article, neither party has responded.
