Fresh alerts emerge. - Experience Germany during the Donner Summer!
It's been storming, hailing, and thundering in Germany today, and meteorologists from the German Weather Service (DWD) have warned that more intense weather is on the way.
Storms predicted in northern and northeastern regions
Metropolitan Schleswig-Holstein to Western Pomerania and Uckermark are set to be hit by storms on Wednesday, with the meteorologically-active regions of north and northeastern Germany facing heavy rain and thunder. "Thunderstorms with rainfall amounts up to 30-50 liters per square meter in a short span of time are possible," DWD meteorologist Marco Manitta said, bluntly.
The situation doesn't seem to be improving either. Manitta surmised, "Regrettably, the possibility for extreme weather events will remain elevated for the next few days. There will be no extended respite from this, at least not in the north and northeast."
Thursday will see the storms return to western and southern regions, with the DWD anticipating thunderstorms with potentially torrential downpours in central and southern Germany. The most affected of these areas are expected to be Nordrhein-Westfalen and northern Rhineland-Palatinate.
Thunderstorms likely in Nordrhein-Westfalen on Friday
Nordrhein-Westfalen could witness more thunderstorms on Friday, with southern thunderstorms potentially pouring into the region throughout the day.
The storms are likely to travel north at a glacial pace, into Saturday. However, forecasters caution that more thunderstorms with heavy rains may still occur on Saturday.
Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland can expect heavy rain
Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland are forecast to experience uncomfortably rainy weather for at least the next few days.
Thursday will see local showers and variable skies, with scattered thunderstorms with heavy rainfall possible. Frequent thunderstorm-like rains are not out of the question either.
A similar scenario is expected on Friday, with thunderstorms once again set to affect Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland.
Hesse's fate is less defined
Hesse will see a reprieve from the rainfall on Wednesday, with no more than a few isolated showers and variable cloud cover expected. There could be local thunderstorms as well.
On Thursday, Hesse's weather radar is expected to show only local showers and variable skies. In the afternoon, a few thunderstorms with heavy rain might make an appearance in the southern regions.
On Friday, heavy rain showers with thunderstorms seem like a fairly certain bet for Hesse. Heavy thunderstorm rains can't be ruled out locally, either.
What's in store?
Dominik Jung, a graduate meteorologist, shared some candid insights, "We don't have a stable high-pressure system that's conducive to good weather. It's going to stay unsettled, and we'll keep seeing bouts of showers and thunderstorms. Even in between, the sun will make an appearance, but it'll be followed by another hefty downpour."
