The Danish Gaming Enforcement Agency, Spillemyndigheden, unveiled an extensive analysis containing market insights on April 16th. The gambling and sports betting market exhibited notable growth compared to the previous year, as shown by these essential numbers:

Online Casinos Rule the Game

In its Danish gaming market analysis, Spillemyndigheden divulged that Danish gamblers invested a substantial 587 million DKK (around 78.68 million EUR) in gambling activities in February 2024, marking a 18.3% boost from February 2023.

The authority also scrutinized where the highest gambling revenues were witnessed:

  • Online Casinos: 45.86%
  • Sports Betting: 31.54%
  • Slot Machines: 17.27%
  • Traditional Casinos: 5.33%

Online casinos reigned supreme over Denmark's gaming scene. Their total gaming revenue stood at 278 million DKK (approximately 37.26 million EUR) in February 2024, signifying a 19% hike from the year prior.

Slots Rule the Roost

Slots emerged as the gaming sector's most favorite choice, accounting for an impressive 76.31% of online casinos' total gaming revenue. Roulette and blackjack trailed behind, respectively, with 6.81% and 6.55%, while bingo made up only 3.37% of their overall gathering.

Per the Danish study, Fridays were the liveliest days at online casinos. Overall, the statistics observed an equal distribution, with no day allegedly surpassing the others.

Underage Gambling Persists

Spillemyndigheden published a report on minor gambling online in January 2024, revealing widespread gambling among Danish minors. These trends continued in February 2024.

Collaborating with the initiative StopSpillet, Spillemyndigheden conducted this study. 50.1% of the seekers reaching out to the organization for aid began gambling between the ages of 0-17. Only participating in online gambling is legal from the age of 18 in Denmark. An astounding 37.4% started indulging in online gambling in their late teens, between the ages of 18-25.

Another study estimated that 15% of Danish youth aged 15-17 had already experienced gambling. The current data underscores that underage gambling is a significant issue in Denmark.

Sports Betting Grows by 33%

The Danish study also encompasses data on the sports betting sector, which expanded by 33% and generated 178 million DKK (about 23.86 million EUR) in gaming revenue in February 2024.

The authority examined which devices Danish punters used to place their sports bets:

  • Mobile Devices: 62.05%
  • Land-based Betting Shops: 23.75%
  • Computers: 14.21%

Saturdays see the majority of sports bets being placed. Sundays and Fridays follow closely. Data from the Danish Gaming Enforcement Agency shows that sports bets are placed in significantly lower numbers during weekdays. The abundance of major sporting events taking place on weekends could be the plausible explanation.

Self-Exclusion Register Figures

Moreover, Spillemyndigheden has not limited its exploration to gaming revenues but has also focused on the ROFUS self-exclusion register [Eng. link]. The register provides gamers an opportunity to register and take a break from gaming.

As of February 2024, a record 48,685 individuals had signed up for the register. Notably, 77.24% of the registered individuals were males, while only 22.76% were females.

Of the registered individuals, 64.98% had secured permanent registrations, while the remainder were registered for specific timeframes. 16.87% of the registered individuals had opted for a six-month break, 11.97% for a three-month hiatus, and 6.18% for a month-long pause.

The comprehensive analysis by Spillemyndigheden revealed that the news of significant growth in the Danish gambling market, including a 19% increase in online casino revenue, was a highlight from their February 2024 report. Furthermore, the analysis indicated that sports betting also saw a notable surge, with a 33% increase in revenue, becoming an increasingly popular choice amongst Danish gamblers.
