Book titled "Kairos" - Erpenbeck and Hofmann: Collaborating on Challenging Capitalism

Hofmann described the experience of reading "Kairos" as having "an East German feel," something he shared with Erpenbeck. Despite having lived in England for 60 years, Hofmann felt a connection to his Saxon ancestry while immersed in the story.

Tuesday marked a significant milestone for 57-year-old German author Erpenbeck. She became the first German to win the esteemed International Booker Prize, a top UK literary honor. Alongside translator Michael Hofmann, Erpenbeck received the award for the English translation of "Kairos."

The novel revolves around a young student's forbidden love affair with a much older and married writer during the last years of East Germany's existence. The relationship crumbles alongside the state, with a shared love of art and music unable to save it. In April 2023, the Staatstheater Cottbus presented a production of the book.

Berliner Zeitung conducted an interview with Hofmann.
