Prosecutorial office's security storage. - Environmental protesters labeled as a law-breaking collective.

The authorities made an announcement on Tuesday, revealing the charges associated with attacks on facilities at the PCK oil refinery in Schwedt, located in the eastern part of Brandenburg. Additionally, the charges include incidents at the capital's BER airport and the Barberini Museum in Potsdam, occurring between April 2022 and May 2023.

Apart from being accused of forming a criminal organization, they are also charged with disrupting public services, coercion, and causing property damage.

The public prosecutor's office further elaborated, stating, "These individuals are believed to be members of a subset within the 'Last Generation' who were particularly eager to engage in more severe criminal activities and actually carried them out."

In recent months, authorities have been investigating supposed climate protection demonstrators from this group. In December 2022, this led to searches being conducted across several regions. Munich's public prosecutor has been investigating five members of the Last Generation for over a year, suspecting them of being part of a criminal organization, while two others are being probed for providing support. Similarly, Flensburg's public prosecutor is also conducting a parallel inquiry.

Doubtful about the criminal organization label

Is the Last Generation actually a criminal organization?

This question has been sparking debates for quite some time. Over the weekend, ten activists from the group added fresh fuel to the discussion. They were arrested temporarily after causing Munich Airport to shut down for roughly two hours due to their sticker campaign. This affected over a hundred thousand passengers during the spring travel season.

Alexander Dobrindt, the leader of the CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag, was unequivocal in his response to this question: "Certainly," he said in May 2023. On the other hand, a report commissioned by the Berlin Senate Justice Administration in summer 2023 sent a different message, saying no.
