Electoral campaign for European positions - Environmental activist targeted in Göttingen.
Marie Kollenrott, a state parliamentarian representing the "Bündnis 90/Die Grünen" party, found herself as the target of an attack in the middle of Göttingen's city center on a Saturday afternoon at around 1:05 PM. The location of the incident was a busy area with plenty of pedestrians, right near the Old Town Hall. After being assaulted, she suffered only minor injuries to her arms.
The police were quick to apprehend the suspected perpetrator, who turned out to be a 66-year-old man from Göttingen. The man was later released after the law enforcement had completed their process of identifying him at the scene.
The State Protection Office has since taken charge of the investigation, and they will be looking into charges of assault against him.
Negative Comments and a Sudden Attack
The Göttingen man had reportedly made some unfavorable remarks about the "Die Grünen" party in the middle of the campaign stand. This was just before a brief political conversation took place between him and the victim. The man then unexpectedly attacked the politician, striking her multiple times in the upper body. After that, he left the area.
Marie Kollenrott described her injuries as scratches and a reddish arm. "I'm in shock," she told the Göttinger Tageblatt.
Witnesses Come to Her Aid
Luckily for Kollenrott, she was not alone during the incident. Multiple bystanders intervened when they witnessed the assault. The politician and a witness pursued the man while simultaneously contacting the police. The police confirmed this sequence of events.
Marie Kollenrott has been a state parliamentarian since 2021, and she is part of the committee for Environment, Energy, Building, and Climate Protection.
