Dortmund manager follows Liverpool's Mockp. - English clubs pursue Terzic for Wembley role
During his discussions with returning player Jadon Sancho, Dortmund's head coach posed three questions: "What do you want? What do you need for it? What can I expect?".
This philosophical statement has been circulating online, turning into a social media sensation (new term: "meme") for many soccer fans. However, it came at the most unfortunate time for BVB.
Facing the risk of being sacked right before Christmas, Terzic had Nuri Sahin and Sven Bender as his assistants.
Dortmund's football performance after their failed championship in May left much to be desired. The criticism against his concept increased, and once again, his job was on the line before playing against Union Berlin on March 2 (2:0). Terzic's incessant "what do you want" rant accompanied him during this period.
But miraculously, Edin Terzic transformed into the elite coach Terzic. He is the third individual following Ottmar Hitzfeld (75) and Jürgen Klopp (56) to lead Dortmund to the Champions League final. Two impressive semi-final victories over Paris Saint-Germain and Kylian Mbappé (25) were achieved.
Terzic remains modest: "This has nothing to do with satisfaction. The joy prevails."
The soccer fan (a photo from 2012 became viral) became the manager of Dortmund when they won the DFB Cup in 2021. However, he had to relinquish the championship on the last match day last season. Regardless, now he is just one victory away from holding the trophy.
CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke (64) and his belief in Terzic's appointment have been vindicated.
During the Paris matches, Terzic declared, "I am immensely happy, delighted, and proud to be Borussia Dortmund's coach. As long as Borussia Dortmund desires me as the coach of Borussia Dortmund, I will continue to be the coach of Borussia Dortmund."
The blown championship, his decision to make Emre Can captain, his playing style, and the fall from the top four resulted in significant obstacles throughout the season. His dressing room experienced tension as well, with several key players criticizing him. The relationship between Marco Reus (34) and Mats Hummels (35) has seemingly cooled down.
Terzic is now the victor! He has coached Mbappé twice, masterminded an enchanting night in the quarter-final second leg against Atlético Madrid (4:2), and silenced his critics with Can's firm response.
Jubilant after the semi-final final whistle, Terzic danced like an ecstatic child in the coaching area at Prinzenpark, embracing his staff and pumping his fists repeatedly. His heart bleeds black and yellow. As he knows all the fan chants by heart and can quote them, he exhibits no hesitance in displaying his loyalty.
After overcoming numerous challenges, Terzic has reignited the belief in the title in Dortmund, distancing himself from Jürgen Klopp's towering shadow by reaching the final ("It was well deserved. Now, go and get it!").
Terzic's contract in Dortmund is valid until 2025, and it is likely that new CEO Lars Ricken (47) will negotiate an extension with him.
It's uncertain what questions will be asked in these talks. However, Ricken can expect one certainty from Terzic: his full dedication.
