In the heart of Kyiv, Ukraine's capital, Independence Day celebrations took place on a significant note this year. The day commemorates the historic vote in 1991 when Ukraine's parliament rejected Soviet rule, leading to the country's independence.

Among the attendees at the celebrations were Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada and President Donald Trump's envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg. Their presence underscored the international support for Ukraine in its ongoing struggle with Russia.

The alliance supporting Ukraine is growing stronger, more determined, and more united, as per Prime Minister Carney. In a demonstration of this unity, Norway and Germany announced they would provide Ukraine with two American-made Patriot air-defense systems. The systems, currently in Germany, will be delivered to Ukraine as soon as possible. Germany also committed to purchasing two Patriot systems from the USA to transfer to Kyiv, while the USA will replace the systems handed over.

However, the situation remains tense. Ukraine claimed that Russia launched 72 drones and one ballistic missile overnight on Ukrainian cities. Russian media reported a different narrative, claiming that at least 150 Ukrainian drones were shot down over 10 regions of Russia.

The director of the independent New Geopolitics Research Network in Kyiv, Mykhailo Samus, expressed that most people in Ukraine do not believe Putin has any intention of reaching a peace agreement. Oleksandr Merezhko, the chair of the Ukrainian parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, believes that reaching peace this year is impossible. Mykhailo Samus also stated that Ukraine is expecting more violence in the coming months.

Despite the challenges, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed hope that future Independence Day celebrations will be held in peace. In his speech in Kyiv's central square, known as the Maidan, he emphasised the importance of unity and resilience in the face of adversity.

In September, Ukraine is expected to receive military aid worth 1 billion Canadian dollars. This aid will include drones, ammunition, and armored vehicles. The aid is intended to strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities and deter further aggression from Russia.

As the conflict continues, it remains to be seen how events will unfold in the coming months. However, one thing is clear: the international community stands with Ukraine in its pursuit of peace and independence.
