Zelensky and Trump voice optimism for trilateral discussions involving Putin, aiming to put an end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict
In a significant development, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with European leaders and President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday. The meeting, which took place before the scheduled talks with Trump, focused on finding a sustainable peace and discussing shared diplomatic capabilities.
European leaders, including unnamed representatives, expressed their support for European security guarantees for Ukraine during the meeting. This support was also reiterated by President Trump. The leaders are focused on finding a sustainable peace and have not ruled out a temporary ceasefire as a means to achieve this goal.
The discussion between the European leaders and Zelensky centred on the current battlefield situation in Ukraine. Zelensky presented a letter from his wife, Olena Zelenska, for Trump's wife, Melania, at the start of the meeting.
During the meeting, Trump suggested a "NATO-like" security presence instead of committing US troops to the effort of ending the war in Ukraine. He stopped short of committing US troops to the cause, instead emphasising the need for a collective security effort.
The leaders also discussed the possibility of three-party talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine. However, the issue of Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014, was not raised during the meeting between Zelensky and the European leaders.
Zelensky faced criticism for appearing in less formal attire during previous meetings, but he dressed more formally this time around. The meeting between the European leaders and Zelensky was more formal compared to their previous meetings.
The US special envoy for Ukraine who spoke with President Zelensky before the planned meeting with Trump is Steve Witkoff. The meeting between the leaders aimed to pave the way for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Trump and Zelensky had a more positive meeting compared to their last Oval Office meeting in February. The meeting marked a significant step towards finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine and strengthening international cooperation.
