Youth Fire Brigade NRW Launches Bird Conservation Project

The Youth Fire Brigade NRW has embarked on an exciting new initiative, a species protection project for native birds, in collaboration with the NRW Foundation. The project, known as "Life Wiesenvögel NRW," began on February 19, 2025, and is located in the heart of Wuppertal, Germany.

The project aims to raise awareness among young firefighters about the importance of nature conservation and actively contribute to the preservation of bird populations. The bird species protected by this project include lapwing, redshank, black-tailed godwit, meadow pipit, and others that breed on the ground and rely on small animals for food. This initiative is part of the project in the Wesel district and other parts of the North Rhine-Westphalia lowlands.

To support this endeavour, the youth fire brigades in North Rhine-Westphalia can order three different assembly kits for nesting boxes as part of the project. These kits, developed by the workshops of the Haus Hall Foundation in Gescher, have been in high demand due to the great interest and commitment of the youth fire brigades to nature conservation.

The project promotes team spirit and craftsmanship among young firefighters as they work together to assemble the nesting boxes. It also combines practical nature conservation with pedagogical elements, making it an engaging and educational experience for all involved.

Inquiries about the project should be directed to the Association of Fire Departments in NRW e.V., located at Windhukstraße 80, 42277 Wuppertal. Contact can be made via email at [email protected], or by phone at Andreas Kirchharz (Tel.: 0202 317712-00, E-Mail: [email protected]). More information can also be found on the Association's website at http://www.vdf-nrw.de.

The cooperation with the NRW Foundation and the workshops of Haus Hall is crucial for the success of this project. The didactic materials for the project are provided by the state business office of the youth fire brigade NRW on their homepage at www.jf.nrw.

Gani Arouna Sidikou, the deputy state youth fire chief of the youth fire brigade NRW, is at the helm of this initiative. His leadership and the commitment of the youth fire brigades promise a successful future for this project and the birds it aims to protect.

The high demand for the nesting box assembly kits shows the great interest and commitment of the youth fire brigades to nature conservation. This project encourages young people to engage in group projects with a practical, hands-on approach, fostering a sense of responsibility and camaraderie among its participants.
