Youngjin Choe Receives Lichting Award 2025 During Amsterdam Fashion Week Celebrations

During Amsterdam Fashion Week, the annual Lichting award for best graduate collection was presented to Youngjin Choe for his collection titled 'Duality of Light'. The collection, which was heavily influenced by Choe's personal experiences and cultural background, was showcased amidst a field of talented finalists, including Bobby Beltz, Dorka Szabo, Eva Popa, Gijs van Herwaarden, Hiromu Takeshita, Jamie Lugtenberg, Karolina Wójtowicz, Magdalena Weigel, and Tijn Roozen.

Choe's collection was inspired by the concept of light filling pain, a theme that was deeply rooted in his work. This inspiration stemmed from his father's words about the unpredictable extent of pain and the ability of light to fill it. The jury praised Choe's work for combining heritage with rebellion, describing it as both "royal" and "understated".

The collection's description also highlighted Choe's study of light as a major theme. This was evident in the designs, which seemed to play with the contrasts and interplay of light and darkness. The jury's description of Choe's work included a "silent struggle between elegance and discomfort", a testament to the collection's thought-provoking design.

Choe's hometown culture in Korea also played a significant role in his collection. He delved deep into the cultural nuances, translating them into unique and innovative designs that resonated with the audience. The 'Duality of Light' collection was a testament to Choe's creativity, talent, and his ability to transform personal experiences into a powerful fashion statement.

With the Lichting award under his belt, Youngjin Choe is poised to make a significant impact in the fashion industry. His 'Duality of Light' collection serves as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring designers, showcasing the power of personal experiences and cultural roots in shaping a unique and impactful fashion statement.
