Yesterday's MacBook models featuring the Touch Bar technology have officially been declared obsolete.
Apple has recently updated its list of obsolete products, marking the end of official support for several MacBook Air and Pro models from 2015 and 2016. These include the MacBook Pro (13-inch and 15-inch), MacBook Air (13-inch), MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2016), MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015), and MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016).
The iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2015) and both the iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch) and iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015) have also been added to the list of obsolete products.
While these products are no longer eligible for official support, Apple continues to offer repairs for its vintage products. However, obsolete products are no longer supported and spare parts may become increasingly hard to find.
It's worth noting that the MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016) models with 2 and 4 Thunderbolt 3 ports still retain the perfunctory touch bar. The 12-inch Retina screen MacBooks from 2015 and 2016 required an additional dongle to connect more than one cable.
The 2017 13-inch MacBook Pro has been added to the "vintage" list. The 2018 13-inch MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, as well as the MacBook Pro (15-inch), are set to become obsolete in the coming years.
The first M1 MacBooks are approaching the point where they will enter their twilight years, marking a new era in Apple's product lifecycle. The 2023 24-inch iMacs with M3 have a 4.5K Retina display or 4480 by 2520 resolution, signalling a step forward in display technology.
Apple products become vintage after about five years of sale. This means that products like the 2018 MacBook Pro (13-inch), which featured Intel's 8th-gen CPUs, are now approaching this milestone. These models are currently still supported up to macOS versions like Ventura and Sonoma, but will eventually lose official support as new macOS releases continue.
As always, it's recommended that users keep their software updated to ensure the best performance and security for their devices. For those with obsolete or vintage Apple products, it may be time to consider an upgrade.
