Yamuna and Ganga Rivers Reach Critical Heights, Flooding UP Regions Beyond Safe Limits
In Uttar Pradesh, several major rivers, including the Ganga, Yamuna, Ghaghara, Sharda, and Ramganga, are flowing above danger levels, causing widespread flooding and displacement.
The release of water from the Narora Dam in Bulandshahr has contributed to sudden water level increases in the Ganga, adding to the existing crisis. Similarly, the Gokul Barrage has discharged 1.60 lakh cusecs of water into the Yamuna river, resulting in historically high water levels in Delhi, displacing over 12,000 people.
The floodwaters have affected a total of 36 districts across Uttar Pradesh, impacting over 6.42 lakh people in 1,877 villages. Among the severely affected districts is Mathura, where catastrophic flooding has transformed over 36 villages into islands. The city is experiencing water levels 1.5 meters above the danger mark.
The situation in Agra is also dire, with the Yamuna river reaching the walls of the Taj Mahal at historic levels. The Tajganj Mokshdam crematorium has been severely affected by the floodwaters, with all funeral platforms submerged. The electric crematorium in Tajganj Mokshdam is at risk of closure due to rising water levels.
In response to the crisis, the government has established 1,222 flood shelters accommodating 65,437 displaced residents and deployed 2,610 boats for rescue operations. Relief operations remain active with coordinated efforts from NDRF, SDRF, and state administration teams working to evacuate affected populations and provide essential supplies.
The administration in Agra has established control rooms for continuous flood monitoring and relief coordination. The water level at the Taj Mahal is currently at 500.50 feet, a condition last seen in 2023.
While the situation in Delhi provides some relief as the Yamuna water level has receded to 205.22 meters, falling below the danger mark of 205.33 meters, the flood crisis continues to affect numerous districts in Uttar Pradesh. The Ganga river has breached the danger mark at 137.20 meters in Farrukhabad, flooding approximately 70-80 villages.
The search results do not provide specific information on which authorities and organizations support the flood relief efforts in Uttar Pradesh in September 2025. However, it is clear that extensive agricultural losses are occurring, with 61,852 hectares of farmland affected and 573 houses damaged.
As the floodwaters continue to rise, the focus remains on providing aid, evacuating affected populations, and minimizing the impact on the millions of people and valuable infrastructure in the affected areas.
