Yale student government deadlocks over 2023 pro-Israel donation controversy

The Yale College Council (YCC) Senate has rejected a proposal urging the university to address its 2023 donation to a pro-Israel group. The decision came after a tied vote and a debate over the council's role in political matters. Students remain divided on whether the YCC should take a public stance on the issue.

The proposal was introduced by Hassaan Qadir '26, who called for Yale to release a formal statement of accountability. His motion followed the university's $1 million donation to the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) in November 2023.

During the debate, some senators questioned the timing of the proposal. Henry Liu '28 argued that condemning the donation now made little sense, as it occurred after Hamas' attacks and did not spark widespread protest at the time. Others, however, pointed to a 2024 student referendum showing majority support for condemning Yale's investments in military weapons manufacturers. The first round of voting ended in a 12-12 deadlock, with three senators abstaining. Under YCC rules, Vice President Bradley could have cast a tie-breaking vote but chose not to. Without a majority, the proposed statement failed. Saniya Mishra '28 warned that a public stance by the YCC could draw national attention and risk affecting student financial aid. The Senate also struggled to agree on whether the council should engage in political issues at all. Founded in 1972, the YCC has historically avoided taking formal positions on divisive topics. This latest debate highlights ongoing tensions over the council's role in representing student views on contentious matters.

The failed proposal leaves Yale's 2023 donation to the FIDF unaddressed by the student government. With no official statement from the YCC, the issue remains unresolved. Students who supported the motion may now seek alternative ways to voice their concerns.
