Yakutia tackles plummeting birth rates with bold family support reforms

A recent meeting in Yakutia addressed the region's declining birth rates and family support challenges. Headed by Aisen Nikolaev, the session brought together officials and experts to discuss solutions for housing shortages and demographic concerns. The Republic of Sakha currently ranks 26th in Russia for quality of life and social satisfaction in 2024.

The gathering focused on key barriers preventing families from having more children, particularly housing and mortgage difficulties. Georgy Stepanov presented findings on regional family-demographic policies, highlighting gaps in current support systems. Grigory Sayfullin also outlined a project-analytical session aimed at boosting fertility and large-family assistance.

Olga Kurilova, representing the Agency for Strategic Initiatives (ASI), attended the discussions. Over 160 events were proposed under a five-block cooperation plan, including initiatives to promote large-family culture and intergenerational support. Corporate housing standards emerged as a potential remedy for the region's accommodation struggles. Nikolaev instructed Yakutia's government to draft a five-year cooperation plan with ASI within a month. The agreement, once finalised, will guide joint efforts to improve family welfare and birth rates across the republic. No specific number of projects or measures was confirmed for the upcoming years, but the session marked a step toward structured collaboration between Yakutia and ASI.

The meeting concluded with a directive to develop a detailed action plan by the end of the month. Housing reforms and demographic policies will remain central to Yakutia's strategy for supporting families. The region's ranking in national quality-of-life assessments underscores the urgency of these efforts.
