Xi's Victory Day address serves as a call to promote peace, with Hong Kong assumed to play a part, asserts Paul Chan
In a significant commemoration of China's victory over Japan in World War II, President Xi Jinping delivered a keynote speech on the 80th anniversary in September 2025 in Beijing. The speech served as a testament to China's commitment to safeguarding peace and its rise as a leading global power.
President Xi emphasised China's historical unity, rise from poverty, and its rightful place in shaping international order. He reinforced anti-Japanese sentiments as part of national memory and legitimacy, asserting that China's rejuvenation is "unstoppable."
The Victory Day military parade in Beijing on Wednesday was a reflection of this commitment, showcasing China's military might. In his speech, Xi stressed that China would stand on the right side of history.
He also proclaimed that the peaceful development of humanity would win out, and treating each other as equals and coexisting in harmony is necessary for all countries to safeguard common security. By following this approach, the root causes of war can be eliminated, and the recurrence of historical tragedies can be prevented.
In his weekly blog on Sunday, Hong Kong's finance chief, Paul Chan Mo-po, described the speech as a "wake-up call." He further discussed how Hong Kong is bolstering its role as a superconnector amid geopolitical challenges, actively contributing to national development strategies, and further enhancing its role as a "super value-adder."
President Xi's speech also underscored the shared destiny of humanity, emphasising that China's peaceful development is intertwined with the world's peace and prosperity. As China continues to rise, it will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the future of our global community.
