Worshipers at the synagogue have decreased by approximately 17% due to fewer visits, enacted to preserve the sacred structure
In the heart of the historic city of Cordoba, Spain, two of the city's most popular attractions, the Jewish Temple and Medina Azahara, have seen a shift in visitor numbers over the past few years.
According to the latest report by the Autonomous Government and the Municipal Tourism Institute (Imtur), the Jewish Temple, a third most visited point of interest in Cordoba in 2023, welcomed 280,771 visitors from January to June. This represents a year-on-year decrease of 17%, a significant drop compared to the previous year.
However, 2019 saw the Jewish Temple record its highest number of visitors, with a total of 619,110 Cordovan and travelers visiting. This was its second-best historical indicator, surpassed only by the 285,672 visitors recorded in 2019 at Medina Azahara.
Medina Azahara, an open-air museum showcasing the remains of a 10th-century palace-city, also experienced a decrease in visitors. In 2024, it ended with 223,830 visitors, marking a 3.7% increase and being the fourth most popular spot among travelers. From January to June 2025, Medina Azahara recorded 121,407 visitors, a 1% increase from the same period in 2024.
Both attractions require prior reservation for groups of more than six people, and this functionality is only accessible for registered users or subscribers.
A study detected risks to the Synagogue's preservation due to factors such as the massive influx of tourists. To protect the heritage values, both the Jewish Temple and the Synagogue now operate on a reduced schedule, from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9:00 to 15:00.
Interestingly, no search results were found that identify a person involved in requesting the government of Córdoba to reduce the Synagogue's opening hours.
This article discusses the visitor statistics for these two significant attractions in Cordoba, offering insights into their popularity and the challenges they face in preserving their historical values.
