In the ongoing conflict in Gaza, the tragic loss of life among journalists has reached unprecedented levels. According to reports, at least 215 journalists have been killed since October 7, 2023, making this the deadliest conflict for reporters in modern times.

The latest casualties occurred last week when Israel carried out back-to-back strikes on the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, resulting in the deaths of five journalists. This tactic, known as a "double tap," has been condemned by many as a dangerous and reckless move. Israel's Prime Minister, Netanyahu, has conceded that the hospital incident was a "tragic mishap."

The Palestinian journalists continue to report under fire, bravely documenting the events unfolding in Gaza. Among those killed was Anas Al-Sharif, a well-known Palestinian journalist. Israel also killed five staff members from the Al Jazeera news network in a strike on Gaza City in early August.

The international community is taking notice of these tragic events. Multiple media outlets are coordinating a large-scale protest on Monday, with nearly 200 outlets from 50 countries taking part. The protest is being organised by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), Avaaz, and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ).

The main objective of the protest is to demand free access for international press in Gaza. Thibat Bruttin, director general of RSF, stated that without journalists, the world will have no one left to keep informed about the situation in Gaza. Video obtained exclusively by CNN showed the second "tap" was in fact two near-simultaneous strikes, highlighting the urgent need for independent reporting.

Israel has been criticised for barring international media from reporting freely in Gaza. This has made it difficult for the world to fully understand the events unfolding in the region. The protest aims to shed light on this issue and call for change.

The conflict in Gaza continues to claim lives and cause suffering. The international community hopes that this protest will bring attention to the plight of journalists and help ensure that they can safely report on the situation in Gaza.
