World-renowned opera singer Su-mi Jo's captivating career journey

In the heart of South Korea, a young prodigy named Su Mi-jo began her musical journey, enrolling in the prestigious music school of Seoul National University. This was just the beginning of an extraordinary career that would take her to the world's most renowned opera stages.

At the tender age of 19, Su Mi-jo embarked on a daring journey from her homeland to Italy, with a dream of becoming an opera singer. The initial period in Italy was challenging, as she navigated an unfamiliar territory without knowing how to cook or speak Italian. However, her determination was unwavering.

Her breakthrough came in 1986, when she made her debut at the prestigious Salzburg Festival, on the recommendation of the renowned Austrian conductor, Herbert von Karajan. This marked the start of a fruitful collaboration between the two, with Karajan praising the beauty of Su Mi-jo's voice. In the same year, she made her opera debut as Gilda in "Rigoletto" by Giuseppe Verdi.

Su Mi-jo's talent and dedication soon brought her significant successes. By the end of the 1980s, she had won several international competitions. Her journey continued in Rome, where she focused on the study of the keyboard and vocal music. Despite being one of the few Asians in Italy during her time there, Su Mi-jo found solace in a puppy she found on the street, which became her only companion during tough times.

Over the years, Su Mi-jo has recorded over 50 albums, including 10 solo albums. Her albums have found an echo with both classical and popular music audiences, and she has been honoured by prominent international opera houses and festivals, including the Vienna State Opera, La Scala in Milan, and the Salzburg Festival.

One of Su Mi-jo's favourite roles is Oscar in "Un ballo in maschera" by Verdi, a role she performed in 1988, under Karajan's direction. Her performance was highly acclaimed, and it remains one of her most cherished experiences.

In 1993, Su Mi-jo was awarded a Grammy Award for her exceptional contribution to the music industry. Her talent and dedication have allowed her to perform in renowned operas and at major international events.

However, Su Mi-jo's journey has not been without its sacrifices. In 2006, she had to miss her father's funeral while performing in Paris. Despite these challenges, she continues to emphasise discipline, emotional connection to music, and staying true to one's cultural roots while striving for excellence in vocal performance.
