World Premiere of 'A Loose End' by Venice Spotlight Player Daniel Hendler from Uruguay Reveals First Trailer (EXCLUSIVE)
In the serene rural landscapes of Uruguay, the emotions of trepidation, longing, doubt, and joy swirl around the protagonist of the multigenre feature, "A Loose End." This highly-atmospheric film, produced by Micaela Solé, blends anxious uncertainty, acerbic dialogue, and a cast of warm characters against dogged bravado.
The trailer for "A Loose End" reveals Santiago, the protagonist, evading detection as he drives through neighboring Uruguay, signaling a shift in priorities from survival to curating a new future. The film is produced by Cordón Films in Uruguay, Wanka Cine in Argentina, Nephilim Producciones in Spain, and features stars such as Pilar Gamboa, Uruguayan musician Alberto Wolf, and César Troncoso.
Argentina's Meikincine will distribute "A Loose End," which won the WIP Latam Industry Award at San Sebastian last year. The film's world premiere is scheduled for September 3, and it will be part of the Venezia Spotlight program at the Venice International Film Festival.
The theme of "A Loose End" is a transitional state before entering wakefulness, as Daniel Hendler, the film's director, compares it to waking from a dream and the impossibility of controlling destiny. Hendler, who has previously released films such as "Norberto's Deadline" (2010), "The Candidate" (2016), and has collaborated with notable Argentinian filmmakers like Daniel Burman, Ariel Winograd, and Natalia Meta, is set to have his third feature film premiered at the Venice Film Festival.
"A Loose End" tells the story of someone exiled and accepted by a new village, with its own rules and peculiarities. The protagonist isn't judged for his past actions because he's willing to rebuild and start over. The film captures the sleepy and aesthetic landscapes of Uruguay, and the feeling of being between two worlds, on the precipice of belonging to something brand new, that sits just out of reach.
The film's structure is somewhere between a detective story, a comedy, and a strange road movie, inviting the audience to discover the possibility of transformation with the fear and hope that it implies. Lucía and Julia Meik, who head Meikincine, expressed excitement and honor about the film's premiere at the Venice International Film Festival. After its Venice premiere, "A Loose End" heads back to the Spanish festival for its prestigious Horizontes Latinos program in September.
Daniel Hendler's acting prowess is not unknown, having won a Berlin Silver Bear for best actor for his role in Burman's "Lost Embrace." He has also received awards for his work, including best director at the Miami Film Festival and a screenplay nod at the New York Havana Film Festival for "The Candidate."
With "A Loose End," Hendler and his team convey the discomfort of the 'non-place,' inviting the audience to join Santiago on his journey towards finding a new home and a new self.
