World Leader Vows Consistent Global Engagement to the International Community
In a significant address at the UN General Assembly in New York, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier described the fall of Kabul as a "turning point" and acknowledged Germany's co-responsibility for the current situation in Afghanistan.
Steinmeier emphasized the need for a balanced approach in international affairs, highlighting the importance of both negotiating power and defense power. He also acknowledged that despite two decades of efforts and investments, a self-sustaining political order was not established in Afghanistan.
The German leader underscored Germany's commitment to fulfilling its international responsibilities, even in the face of challenges. He also assured the international community of continuity after a change of government in Germany, with the new Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, assuming office on May 6, 2025.
Steinmeier concluded that the lessons from the Afghanistan mission should include investing more in defense capability. He also stated that Germany's partners can rely on the country, and its competitors must continue to reckon with it.
The speech, pre-released before its delivery, served as a clear demonstration of Germany's ongoing engagement and commitment towards maintaining peace and stability in Afghanistan and the broader international community.
