World Health Organization seeks enhanced safeguards against future pandemics

The Corona pandemic, caused by the Sars-CoV-2 virus, has been a global challenge since its onset in early 2020. The disease, known as Covid-19, has affected millions worldwide, including in Germany, causing severe lung disease in some cases.

During the pandemic, issues such as the distribution of vaccine materials and protective clothing have been prominent concerns. Fortunately, several vaccines are now available for the Corona virus disease.

The World Health Organization (WHO), an international organisation tasked with combating diseases worldwide and improving health, has been at the forefront of the global response to the pandemic. The WHO works closely with the United Nations, also known as the UN.

The Corona pandemic has underscored the need for international cooperation in addressing global health crises. In May 2025, at the 78th World Health Assembly, all WHO member states agreed on the text of the International Pandemic Agreement. This agreement aims to prevent another pandemic like Corona from happening again.

The agreement emphasises the importance of fair distribution of essential products such as masks and vaccine materials. It also encourages companies to share their knowledge about medicines and vaccine materials voluntarily. Each country is expected to do everything to immediately recognise dangerous diseases and share important information about the causes of diseases with other countries.

The contract also preserves state sovereignty, ensuring that member states retain their national decision-making powers. However, it does not explicitly mention which countries have signed or not signed the treaty.

As we move forward, the hope is that this agreement will serve as a blueprint for global cooperation in addressing future health crises, ensuring a more equitable and effective response to pandemics that threaten our world.
