World Health Organization Announces Termination of Monkeypox Emergency Status
Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, a prominent global health figure and the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), has declared that Monkeypox is no longer a global health emergency. This decision was made following a quarterly meeting of the Emergency Committee on the Monkeypox outbreak.
The WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, noted that members of the Emergency Committee recommended lifting the public health emergency of international concern. This declaration does not mean that Monkeypox has been eradicated, but rather that it is no longer considered a global emergency due to a decline in cases and deaths in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and other affected countries.
Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, a high-ranking official within the WHO, has been serving as the Director-General since July 1, 2017, having been elected on May 23, 2017. Prior to this, he was Ethiopia's Minister of Health (2005-2012) and Minister of Foreign Affairs (2012-2016). He is known as the first African to serve as WHO Director-General.
The Emergency Committee on the Monkeypox outbreak is a group within the WHO that provides advice during public health emergencies. The decision to lift the global health emergency status for Monkeypox is significant as it indicates a decrease in the severity of the outbreak.
The declaration was made by Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Friday in Geneva, Switzerland. As a key figure in the World Health Organization, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is a notable individual in the global health community, serving as the Director-General of WHO. He is a medical professional, a public health leader, and a global health official.
This news marks a positive development in the global fight against Monkeypox. While the outbreak is no longer a global emergency, it is important for individuals to remain vigilant and follow public health guidance to prevent the spread of the disease.
