Germany to Host the 13th World Games in Karlsruhe in 2029
The city of Karlsruhe, Germany, is set to host the 13th World Games in 2029, marking a significant milestone for the global sports community. The event, which showcases non-Olympic sports, will take place from July 19 to 29, 2029.
The state of Baden-Württemberg and the federal government have pledged funding shares of 33 million and 55 million euros respectively for the upcoming games. The planned costs for the event amount to around 120 million euros.
Karlsruhe has a unique distinction of being the first city to host the World Games of non-Olympic sports for the second time. The city previously hosted the World Games in 1989.
The World Games program includes a diverse range of sports such as Baseball/Softball, Beach Handball, Archery, Billiards, Cheerleading, Duathlon, Faustball, Flag Football, Floorball, Fin Swimming, Frisbee Sports, Gymnastics, Inline Skating, Ju-Jitsu, Karate, Canoeing, Kickboxing, Climbing, Korfball, Powerlifting, Lacrosse, Air Sports, Muay Thai, Orienteering, Petanque, Powerboating, Racquetball, Lifesaving, Sambo, Squash, Dance Sport, Tug of War, Wakeboarding, or Wushu.
Over 5,000 world-class athletes from more than 100 countries in approximately 35 sports are expected to participate in the games. Germany, with its impressive sporting history, has won more medals at the World Games than any other nation, with the exception of Italy.
At the 11th World Games in Birmingham, Germany topped the medal table with 47 medals (24 gold, 7 silver, 16 bronze).
IWGA President José Perurena expressed confidence that the global community of The World Games can look forward to world-class sporting action and entertainment in Karlsruhe. Dr. Christiane Schenderlein, Minister of State for Sport and Volunteering, also expressed enthusiasm about hosting the World Games 2029 in Germany.
Dr. Frank Mentrup, Mayor of Karlsruhe, expressed delight about the World Games returning to Karlsruhe. During the closing ceremony of the 12th World Games in Chengdu, China, the flag and a symbolic heart were handed over to the Minister of State for Sport and Volunteering, Dr. Christiane Schenderlein, Baden-Württemberg's Minister of Sport Theresa Schopper, and Karlsruhe's Mayor Dr. Frank Mentrup.
