World Cup dismissal: Athletes from volleyball squad cut short
The 2025 World Championship of volleyball, featuring a record 32 teams, saw a dramatic exit for the German women's team. In a closely contested match in Bangkok, Thailand, Italy emerged victorious, eliminating Germany with a score of 3:0.
The German team started the match on a strong note, leading 10:8 early on, thanks to the efficient reception, led by libero Anna Pogany. However, Italy's defense remained outstanding throughout the match, consistently converting defensive actions into good attacking opportunities.
Italy's superstar player, Paola Egonu, led the charge for the Italian team, while Lina Alsmeier, the outside hitter on the German team, tried valiantly to keep pace. Unfortunately for Germany, misunderstandings piled up, and they made too many mistakes in the second and third sets.
Italy dominated the third set from the start, leading 10:4, and never looked back. The German block, which had been effective earlier in the match, could not maintain its momentum.
This is not the first time Germany has faced elimination in the round of 16. In 2022, they were also knocked out at this stage. Italy, on the other hand, is the reigning Olympic champions and currently boasts a 33-match winning streak in official matches.
The round of 16 marks the final elimination round before the quarterfinals. This World Championship will now take place every two years, providing more opportunities for teams to compete at the highest level.
Despite the disappointing outcome, the German team can take pride in their performance in the group stages, where they narrowly lost to Poland in the battle for the group title. As the volleyball world moves forward, Germany will undoubtedly be looking to regroup and come back stronger in future tournaments.
