Women's Bundesliga is in high gear.
Bundesliga Gears Up for Exciting New Season
The 2025/26 Bundesliga season is set to kick off with a bang, as the league prepares for its expansion and a host of exciting developments.
The European record for a league game, currently standing at 60,739 spectators, could be within reach this season, as over 50,000 tickets have already been sold for the opening game between Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen. This sets a new Bundesliga record and indicates a strong appetite for football among German fans.
Last season, Bundesliga clubs could only sell an average of 2,700 tickets per game, but this trend seems to be changing. The league has been expanded by two starting places, and 14 teams will participate in the new season, an increase from the previous 12.
One of the newcomers to the Bundesliga is 1. FC Union Berlin, who secured promotion by defeating Borussia Mönchengladbach 6:1 on April 27th, 2025. The promotion game was played in front of over 14,000 spectators at the Stadion an der Alten Försterei.
Bayer Leverkusen is expected to be stronger this season, having finished fourth last year. However, new-old coach Stephan Lerch has a big task ahead, with 15 players having left and 12 new ones having joined.
Other teams aiming to challenge at the top include VfL Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt. However, Wolfsburg remained without a title for the first time last season, and they will be eager to make amends.
Meanwhile, in the Women's Bundesliga, coach Roberto Pätzold is optimistic about his team's prospects for the new season. The Women's Super League in England receives over 15 million euros annually, three times as much as the Bundesliga, and the DFB has announced its intention to establish a joint venture with Bundesliga clubs to counter the loss of top players.
Elsewhere, Liese Brancao, the new HSV coach, wants to cause an upset. Born in the Brazilian city of Nova Hamburgo, Brancao has brought eight new players from her former club and is determined to make her mark on the Bundesliga.
As the season draws closer, the number of tickets sold could potentially increase further before the game starts. The first Bundesliga season for 1. FC Union Berlin in the 2025/26 campaign will start on August 22, 2025. With so much excitement building, it promises to be a season not to be missed.
