Woman's heartbreaking fight for reproductive rights after fatal fetal diagnosis
A woman forced to travel abroad for a medical procedure after her unborn child was diagnosed with a fatal condition has shared her story. The experience left her feeling abandoned by her home country’s laws. Now, she is speaking out to support a European campaign for better reproductive rights.
Her son, Grga, was diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour at 25 weeks. Doctors confirmed he would not survive birth, leaving her with an impossible choice.
The pregnancy was her second, and scans revealed the devastating news early on. Medical professionals told her Grga’s condition was fatal, and he would never live outside the womb. After careful thought, she and her husband decided to end the pregnancy to spare their child further suffering.
Croatian law denied her access to the procedure at home. Despite having a legal right to choose, she faced refusal and no support. With no other option, she travelled to Slovenia to give birth to Grga, where the medical team could provide the necessary care. Returning to Croatia, she felt broken and alone. The lack of assistance deepened her grief, leaving her struggling to recover. Support eventually came from organisations like *My Voice My Choice*, which offered psychological and legal guidance during her ordeal. The *My Voice My Choice* initiative has since gained huge momentum. It collected over 1.2 million signatures and won strong backing from the European Parliament. If successful, the campaign would guarantee women access to safe abortion and essential healthcare without financial barriers or legal obstacles.
Her letter now stands as a plea for change, written on behalf of all families who have faced similar heartbreak. The initiative’s success in Europe could reshape reproductive rights, ensuring no woman is forced to travel for care. For her, the fight is personal—a way to honour Grga’s memory and prevent others from enduring the same pain.
