Nestled in the heart of Alaska, Whittier is a unique town often described as a "town under one roof." This moniker comes from the fact that the majority of its 272 residents live in Begich Towers, a self-contained complex that houses essential amenities and shelters the locals from the harsh Alaskan weather.

Begich Towers, designed during the Cold War by architect Edwin Butler Crittenden, stands as a testament to resilience and innovation. The towering structure shields the town from the region's snowy winters, rainy summers, and tundra winds, offering a sense of solitude that many find appealing.

Life within Begich Towers is a far cry from the hustle and bustle of big cities or even other small towns. Erika Thompson, a teacher living in the towers, shared that everyone knows each other, and they have everything they need. The complex boasts a grocery store, a health clinic, a post office, a church, a playground, an indoor garden, a police station, and even underground tunnels leading to other buildings.

The town's only means of entry or exit by car or train is through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, a 2.5-mile-long railway and road tunnel that connects Whittier to the rest of the Kenai Peninsula. This isolation adds to the unique charm of the town, creating a close-knit community where everyone looks out for each other.

Dave Dickason, the mayor of Whittier, echoed this sentiment, stating that they don't need big box stores or the conveniences of a large city. Instead, they cherish their simple way of life, where neighbours are more than just acquaintances, but a vital support system.

Recently, Jenessa Dickason, the mayor's daughter, gained millions of views on TikTok, explaining the supportive nature of the community. She shared that residents rarely feel sad due to the community's warmth and camaraderie.

Whittier's "town under one roof" offers a unique alternative to the fast-paced life of big cities. With its close-knit community, essential amenities, and protective architecture, Begich Towers provides a sanctuary for its residents, offering a sense of solitude amidst the Alaskan wilderness.
