Porsche Introduces Inductive Charging for Electric Cayenne

Porsche has announced an exciting new feature for its all-electric Cayenne: an optional inductive charging floor plate. This innovative addition is set to debut in Europe next year, with plans to expand to other regions, including North America.

The inductive charging system, which supports a charging speed of 11 kW, offers a convenient and seamless charging experience. When the driver aligns the SUV over the charging pad, the air suspension automatically lowers for charging, ensuring a secure connection. The charging distance between the two units is reduced to between four and six inches when the vehicle is in position.

The costs for the inductive charging system, including the necessary hardware in the vehicle and the induction charging pad, amount to nearly 7,000 Euros. The induction pad alone costs about 5,000 Euros, with these costs typically borne by the customer as optional equipment.

The charging floor plate contains all the necessary components to initiate charging over the air. The inductive charging receiver unit is located between the front wheels of the electric Cayenne. The My Porsche app is used to monitor all energy transferred through the inductive charging pad.

Interestingly, Tesla's upcoming Cybercab will also support inductive charging, following in the footsteps of the McLaren Speedtail, a hybrid vehicle that previously included a compact charging pad.

A camouflaged prototype of the electric Cayenne will be showcased at the IAA Mobility Show in Munich, Germany, next week. In addition to the inductive charging feature, the prototype features a fluorescent paint made up of five different tones that glows with bright shades of light when exposed to alternating voltage. The Cayenne's Surround View parking function helps guide drivers into the correct position for charging.

This new inductive charging option is part of Porsche's commitment to providing innovative and user-friendly solutions for electric vehicles. As the world moves towards a more sustainable future, such advancements are instrumental in making electric vehicles more accessible and appealing to a wider audience.
