Winnipeg's traffic officer successful in preventing a shoplifting incident as reported by the police.
In Winnipeg, a 25-year-old man was arrested during a shoplifting incident that took place on Donald Street on Wednesday afternoon. The incident was part of a series of retail thefts that have been occurring in the city.
The arrest was initiated when an employee of the store flagged down an officer for help. A struggle ensued during the arrest, and a knife was recovered from the scene. Another knife fell from the suspect's waistband during the struggle.
The suspect is facing charges for theft under $5,000, assaulting a peace officer, resisting a peace officer, weapon possession, and failing to comply with release conditions.
This retail theft incident comes as the city is taking measures to address the issue. More police are on foot patrol as part of a retail theft initiative, and the Violent Crime and Retail Theft Initiative is set to receive an additional 12 officers this spring.
