Wine magnate Dominus strengthens his presence in Napa Valley through a groundbreaking acquisition of a renowned vineyard.

In a strategic move that underscores its ambition and long-term commitment to Napa Valley, Dominus Estate has announced the acquisition of the Yountville Ranch. This historic vineyard, located on the southern edge of the Rutherford Bench in the Yountville District, has been farmed continuously for over a century and is a model for sustainable viticulture in the region.

The Yountville Ranch, which carries significant history having been part of George Yount's 1836 Mexican land grant, was most recently owned by Christian Moueix. Before its acquisition by Dominus Estate in 2025, the vineyard was under the stewardship of Markham Vineyards founder Bruce Markham, who acquired it in 1975. It became the source of the estate's first Cabernet Sauvignon in 1978.

Both the Yountville Ranch and Dominus share a distinctive terroir of gravelly loam, fine-grained silt, and clay at the foot of the Mayacamas range. This shared terroir, coupled with Dominus' love of wine and its life-enhancing qualities, makes the acquisition a natural extension for the estate.

With the acquisition, the Moueix family now controls more than 80ha (200 acres) of contiguous vineyards stretching across the western side of Yountville and Oakville. Dominus, owned by the Moueix family of Bordeaux, currently cultivates 41.6ha (103 acres) at the Napanook vineyard.

Christian Moueix, describing the move as a 'natural extension', confirmed Dominus' intent to manage the vineyard. Much of the Yountville Ranch is expected to be replanted in the coming years. The replanted vines will be integrated into Dominus' long-term programme of adaptive viticulture.

From the 2026 vintage, grapes from the Yountville Ranch will be used to produce Dominus, Napanook, and Othello. This expansion is expected to strengthen Dominus' position in the competitive Napa Valley wine market, which has seen a subdued period with several estates scaling back tasting room operations or shifting focus.

The purchase of the Yountville Ranch represents a bold new chapter for Dominus Estate, reflecting their passion for the vineyard and confidence in the future of the Napa Valley. Markham Vineyards alerted our website to the sale of the Yountville Ranch on August 26.

In 2008, the Moueix family added Ulysses, a 16ha (40-acre) site in Oakville, to their vineyards. With the addition of the Yountville Ranch, Dominus' acquisition effectively brings a large portion of the historic estate back under single ownership.

The acquisition affirms Dominus' commitment to Napa Valley and its terroir. As the estate continues to grow, it remains dedicated to producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique characteristics of the region.
