Saxon York needed to increase its development in wind energy sector - Wind energy development in Saxony needs to be accelerated, advocates.

In a recent visit to an energy supply company, Dirk Panter, the SPD's Minister of Economics in Saxony, emphasised the need for a faster expansion of renewable energy sources in the region.

Panter highlighted the concern of cost-effectiveness in network expansion, particularly in the implementation of renewable energy projects. He referenced the planned increase in the yield share for municipalities from wind energy, which is expected to benefit many towns and villages in Saxony.

The minister pointed out that only 0.2% of Saxony's area is currently built up for wind turbines, indicating a significant catch-up needed. Leipzig, though not explicitly mentioned, is likely one of the municipalities that could be affected by the wind energy expansion plans.

Panter advocated for a broad energy mix in Saxony, including photovoltaics, biomass, geothermal energy, and new gas-fired power plants at former coal sites. He stressed the importance of hydrogen as a building block in the energy transition, but warned against exaggerated expectations.

The focus on new gas-fired power plants suggests that Saxony may still be reliant on fossil fuels to some extent in its energy transition. However, Panter asserted that renewable energies are the most cost-effective energy generation methods.

Panter also emphasised the need for pragmatic cost consideration in network expansion. He stated that a hydrogen backbone network is necessary in Saxony, aiming to significantly advance the region in wind energy expansion.

The target is to designate 2% of Saxony's area for wind turbines by 2032, as also planned by the federal government. The fixed payment for each kilowatt hour of wind energy will flow to the municipality, with at least half being passed on to the affected villages. The decision on how much to pass on to the villages is left to the city or village council.

The aim of this payment is to strengthen acceptance and support for wind turbines locally. Panter's advocacy for a broader energy mix and faster expansion of renewable energies comes as Saxony lags behind other federal states, particularly those in the east, in the expansion of renewable energies.

Dirk Panter, a member of the SPD party, has been instrumental in driving the renewable energy agenda in Saxony, aiming to make the region a leader in the energy transition.
