Wife of Syria's president takes center stage during joint graduation ceremony with husband
Latifa al-Droubi, the wife of Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, made her first public appearance in early February, marking a significant moment in Syrian politics. Droubi, who had not been known in public circles before her debut, accompanied Sharaa on official visits to Saudi Arabia and Türkiye.
The occasion for Droubi's public appearance was her graduation from the Arabic language department at Idlib University. The graduation ceremony, which was held in a celebration of the "Victory and Liberation Class," was marked by visible applause and celebration. Droubi expressed her gratitude towards her husband, Ahmad al-Sharaa, for his support as a woman, wife, and student in her graduation speech.
Sharaa, who is associated with the transitional authority in Syrian politics and is known as the transitional president leading a post-Assad government, was also present at the ceremony. He was formerly the leader of the Islamist rebel alliance Haiat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) that helped overthrow Bashar al-Assad.
Droubi's graduation ceremony took place at Idlib University, a location that has endured, blossomed, and nurtured hope amidst the political instability in Syria. Social media users have shared photos of Sharaa with his wife, indicating a visible display of their affectionate and close relationship.
Droubi's graduation attracted significant media attention due to her previous anonymity in public circles. Photos of Droubi holding her graduation certificate were shared widely, and her speech emphasized her perseverance in pursuing her academic dreams despite challenges.
Sharaa has recalled urging his wife to move to a safer location with their children, but she remained steadfast and continued to support him. The couple has been living together despite the instability in their lives, with Sharaa revealing that they have lived in multiple locations, including living in the mountains.
Droubi was seen accompanying Sharaa on official visits to Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, further highlighting her significant role as the First Lady of Syria. Droubi's public appearances have been significant due to her previously unknown status, and her graduation ceremony is a testament to her strength and resilience in the face of adversity.
