Why The Winds of Winter remains unfinished as Game of Thrones prequels thrive

Why The Winds of Winter remains unfinished as Game of Thrones prequels thrive

Fans of A Song of Ice and Fire continue to wait for the next book in the series, The Winds of Winter, as George R.R. Martin remains focused on other projects. Meanwhile, the world of Game of Thrones expands on screen with new and upcoming prequel shows, including A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which premiered in January 2023.

The last published book in the main series, A Dance with Dragons, arrived in 2011. Since then, Martin has worked on The Winds of Winter, which currently stands at around 1,100 manuscript pages as of January 2026. However, no release date has been set, and the author has made clear that other works—such as additional Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas—take priority.

On television, the Game of Thrones universe keeps growing. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on Martin's Dunk and Egg stories, debuted on HBO in the US on January 18, 2023, and on Sky and NOW TV in the UK the following day. The show stars Peter Claffey as Dunk and Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg. Another prequel, House of the Dragon, began in August 2022 and has been renewed for a third season, with a final fourth season planned for 2028. Seven Kingdoms, a third prequel series, is currently airing and has already been confirmed for a second season in 2027.

Behind the scenes, more spinoffs are in development. Around five or six projects are reportedly in the works, including Aegon's Conquest, which will cover Aegon Targaryen's invasion of Westeros, with Mattson Tomlin attached as writer. Other rumoured titles, such as The Golden Empire, The Sea Snake, and 10,000 Ships, have yet to be confirmed. One project, a Jon Snow spinoff, was abandoned in 2024 due to creative disagreements.

Martin first wrote the Dunk and Egg novellas between 1998 and 2010, with plans to add more in the future. Despite the delays in the main book series, the author's world continues to expand through both print and screen.

While The Winds of Winter remains unfinished, the Game of Thrones franchise shows no signs of slowing down. With multiple prequels in production and more on the way, the series' legacy lives on through television. Fans, however, still await concrete updates on the long-awaited next instalment of the book series.
