A new study has revealed that many Americans remain unaware of the benefits of a low-fat, plant-based diet in managing type 2 diabetes. The research found that just 21% of respondents knew a low-fat, plant-based diet could help prevent or manage type 2 diabetes. Yet, in a 22-week trial, 43% of participants on a low-fat vegan diet reduced or stopped their diabetes medications entirely. This suggests a gap between scientific evidence and public awareness.
Half of those who had discussed diabetes with their doctors believed a low-carb diet was the best option. However, studies confirm that plant-based eating improves insulin sensitivity and lowers diabetes risk. Many also assume drastic changes are needed, but experts note that even small steps—like Meatless Mondays—can make a difference. The National Diabetes Program now offers free online support for anyone looking to shift toward plant-based meals. Health professionals emphasise that full veganism isn't required; simply adding more plant proteins and cutting back on animal products can bring benefits.
The study underscores a key opportunity for doctors to guide patients toward healthier diets. With most Americans open to dietary changes if medically recommended, better education could lead to wider adoption of plant-based eating.
