Why Europe's raccoon hunts backfire—and the humane fix that works
Raccoons in Europe continue to face widespread hunting despite scientific evidence showing the practice is ineffective. In Switzerland, the animals are targeted using methods critics argue lack proper justification. Meanwhile, a German city has proven that humane alternatives work better for long-term population control.
Hunting raccoons has failed to reduce their numbers, according to PETA expert Peter Höffken. Data reveals that 282,499 dead raccoons in recent years have not shrunk populations—instead, the killings triggered higher reproduction rates. This offset losses and even accelerated growth.
The EU's invasive species list includes raccoons, a classification experts dispute. Pro-hunting groups reportedly influenced this decision, leading to more parent animals being killed and leaving young to starve. Research also shows raccoons pose little threat to native biodiversity and are not the main cause of species decline. Kassel's sterilisation programme offers a proven alternative. The city's pilot project involved catching, sterilising, and releasing raccoons, preventing population spread without new animals moving in. The Hessian Hunting Association tried to block the scheme but was overruled by the Federal Environment Ministry. Switzerland's hunting figures remain unclear, with no exact 2023 data available. Recent reports suggest around 69 raccoons are killed annually, a sharp rise from just one in 2016.
The Kassel model demonstrates that sterilisation works where hunting fails. With science showing high kill rates only increase reproduction, policymakers face pressure to adopt evidence-based wildlife management. The EU's invasive species list and current hunting practices remain under scrutiny for their lack of scientific grounding.
