White House proposes recruiting American Private Military Companies as part of promises made for Ukraine's protection
In the ongoing efforts to bolster Ukraine's security, final details of the proposed "security guarantees" are expected to be revealed in the coming days. These guarantees, which could include air patrols, exercises, and a naval mission in the Black Sea, are currently the subject of intense discussions among more than a dozen Western officials.
The main ideas of these security guarantees involve Ukrainian forces standing guard on the heavily fortified border as part of a potential peace agreement. Germany has proposed increasing its military contribution, focusing on air defense and sustaining ammunition and repair capabilities. However, the exact numbers of soldiers in these proposals remain undisclosed.
The "Coalition of the Willing," a group of European countries ready to provide security guarantees to Ukraine, is also discussing coordinated troop deployments. While no detailed troop counts have been publicly reported for these plans, it is speculated that the number of European soldiers that could be deployed could reach "thousands." Countries such as the UK, France, Germany, Belgium, and Northern Europe are among those potentially ready to join.
However, European officials are reluctant to involve their military personnel as peacekeepers. Instead, they are considering deploying deterrent forces far from the front line, at an "imaginary third line of defense." The presence of American citizen contractors is seen as an additional deterrent factor against Russia.
The U.S. President, Donald Trump, has proposed the involvement of American private military companies to assist with fortifications and serve as a deterrent factor against Russia. This would allow him to appease the fears of the most isolationist wing of his supporters, as it doesn't involve sending American troops to Ukraine.
Discussions also include the idea of creating a "no-fly zone" to allow Ukraine to resume civilian aviation flights. Proposals from individual countries still lack specifics, with clarity expected once the U.S. contribution is known.
In addition, discussions about the acquisition of additional air defense systems for Ukraine, such as Patriot and NIMARS, from the U.S. using European state funds are ongoing. The deployment of European deterrent forces is being considered, with an idea of creating a demilitarized zone around the frozen line of contact, to be patrolled by peacekeepers or observers. However, there is no consensus on this issue.
The President of Ukraine has publicly criticized the idea of a demilitarized zone. Previously, discussions about the contingent mentioned a figure of around 30,000, but it seems this has been reduced due to resource constraints and fears of being perceived as "muscle-flexing."
European NATO members will continue to arm and train Ukrainian military personnel, using existing and new mechanisms. A patrol mission in the Black Sea, led by Turkey, is being discussed to strengthen maritime security. Trump suggested this during negotiations with European states regarding potential security guarantees for Ukraine as part of a peace agreement.
Trump's statement that Putin is not opposed to Western partners offering Ukraine security guarantees reportedly contributed to the intensification of European work on the plan. European officials are intensifying work on a plan to prevent a new "hot" war, with the main task being to strengthen the Ukrainian army as the main deterrent factor against Russia.
The American companies could be involved in reinforcing fortifications, building new military bases, and protecting American business on Ukrainian territory. However, the exact details of these collaborations are yet to be finalized.
