White House Appoints Deputy of Robert Kennedy Jr. to Succeed Ousted CDC Director
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is currently experiencing a period of significant change, with a new acting head appointed and several high-level officials resigning in solidarity.
Jim O'Neill, currently deputy to Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), has been selected as the acting head of the CDC. Kennedy, a prominent anti-vaccination activist, has moved to reshape the agency and expel advisers who do not align with his views.
This shift has not been without controversy. Susan Monarez, the previous CDC Director, has been removed from her position. Monarez clashed with Kennedy over questions of misinformation and vaccine policy, and was reportedly fired due to her alleged lack of alignment with President Trump's mission to make America healthy again. The White House Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, stated that Monarez initially agreed to resign but later retracted her decision, leading to her termination.
Monarez's departure was followed by the resignation of Demetre Daskalakis, the former director for the National Center for Immunization and Resichery Diseases. Daskalakis cited potential harm as the reason for his resignation, warning that the agency's new direction under Trump poses real risks to public health.
The departure of Monarez and Daskalakis has not been isolated incidents. Several high-level CDC officials have resigned in solidarity with Monarez and in defiance of what they depicted as the undermining of scientific expertise as a basis of public health policy.
This exodus of experienced leadership has not gone unnoticed. Fired But Fighting, a group composed of laid-off employees, condemned Kennedy for his continuous lies about science and vaccine safety, which have fueled a climate of hostility and mistrust. AFGE Local 2883, a union representing CDC employees, described the shooting at the CDC headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, which left one police officer dead and the suspect taking his own life, as not random and a compounding of months of mistreatment, neglect, and vilification that CDC staff have endured.
The CDC is continuing to winnow down its workforce, and critical CDC workers have been accused of being terminated in a destroy-first-and-ask-questions-later manner. Representatives for the CDC's workers have denounced Robert F Kennedy Jr for contributing to public distrust of the health agency.
Richard Besser, former acting director of the CDC, stated that Monarez refused to approve unscientific and reckless directives. Kennedy has been accused of spreading COVID-19 "misinformation" and arguing that the agency's culture needs to change.
These developments at the CDC are ongoing, and their impact on public health remains to be seen. As the agency navigates these changes, it is crucial that scientific expertise continues to guide its decisions and that the public maintains trust in its work.
