Weekend holiday travel in NRW: traffic flow remains easygoing on return trips
Over the summer weekend, North Rhine-Westphalia's largest airports experienced a surge in passenger numbers, with Düsseldorf and Dortmund airports breaking records.
Approximately 210,000 passengers were expected at Düsseldorf airport between Friday and Sunday, marking a significant increase in travel activity. Meanwhile, Dortmund Airport anticipated around 391,900 passengers during the NRW summer holidays from June 25 to August 9. This number represents a nearly 2% increase compared to the previous record summer in 2019, setting a new passenger record for the airport.
Despite the high number of passengers, operations at both airports ran smoothly. Airport spokespeople reported no significant delays, ensuring a hassle-free travel experience for the tens of thousands of travelers who returned to the region over the weekend.
Cologne/Bonn airport, on the other hand, experienced a less busy weekend, with approximately 115,000 passengers anticipated over the same period. Operations at the airport were described as very quiet by a dpa reporter.
The calm on the roads persisted until the afternoon, with the total length of traffic jams in the state by Sunday afternoon less than 100 kilometers. While WDR traffic studio and ADAC traffic reports primarily indicated everyday delays, these were mainly due to construction sites or closures rather than increased traffic.
Overall, the summer weekend in North Rhine-Westphalia's airports was characterised by record numbers of passengers and smooth operations, with traffic remaining relatively calm despite the high number of travelers.
