On July 18, 2025, the Federal Police Directorate Saint Augustin stepped up its efforts to maintain border security, reintroducing temporary border controls at all land Schengen internal borders as per the instructions of the Federal Minister of the Interior and Homeland.

In a series of incidents over the following days, the police force made several arrests in the areas of Kleve, Emmerich, Gronau, and Niederkrüchten.

On the A52 highway, a 46-year-old Albanian was controlled upon entry from the Netherlands. Further investigation revealed that the Albanian was wanted by the Dresden Public Prosecutor's Office for a suspended sentence of 404 days for burglary. After completion of police measures, the Albanian was taken to the Federal Police Station in Kempen.

On the same day, a 49-year-old Czech was arrested by the Federal Police on the A61 highway for smuggling aliens, with a warrant issued by the Cottbus Public Prosecutor's Office. The Czech still owes a fine of 8900 euros or faces an 89-day prison sentence.

Later, on Sunday evening, July 20, 2025, a 25-year-old Romanian was controlled by the Federal Police at the train station in Gronau. The Romanian was wanted by the Osnabrück Public Prosecutor's Office for indecent exposure. Unfortunately, the Romanian could not pay a fine of 2600 euros and was taken to the prison in Münster to serve a 65-day prison sentence.

The personal details of the 46-year-old Albanian were checked during the control, revealing an entry and residence ban by the Dresden Alien Office in effect against him.
